WHAT ABOUT NAME BADGES!?

The thing that always impressed me about our game in days gone by was the civilized attitude that bowlers and clubs themselves had towards wearing name badges.  One always felt comfortable about meeting players that perhaps you had not encountered for some time because a look at the name badge on the chest was a reassuring memory jogger.

No longer does this great feature have any where near the priority it used to have, and it is an absolute reality that ”the good old days were better”, and we actually had consideration for our fellow woman or man.

There is a good feeling that comes out of being spoken to by someone who uses your name. Who cares if they have to read it off your chest.

Clubs themselves and ours included bear responsibility for ignoring this courtesy. Perhaps they/we might institute a NAME & SHAME system whereby it is a $1 fine for the omission which when paid saves the person the “shame”of being “named”over the microphone .

The fines system seems to have created a lot of fun for the One Blue mob and perhaps this system would be an extension of that approach?

Men's Saturday Pennant Teams Win Promotion - March 28th

Div 1 Blue South and Div 4 Red were successful in the play-offs for promotion. The Blue South game looked to be won at the halfway point but to Melville's credit they fought back and the game went down to the last ends of Graham Scott's and Alan Holme's rinks. The Div 4 Red game also went to the wire with Roy Criddle drawing shot on the last end to win the game. Congatulations to all the members of both teams.

The Over 60's State Pairs - February 11th 2010

It’s exciting when members in your own club are in the finals mix and being present at both the semi and final victories of the combination of Ray Kennedy and Norm Read was a real hoot.  Their campaign started at Manning where a draw against J Weir and Mitch Brown of Wanneroo caused a stumble but not a trip.  Then it was Lindsay Thorn and Roger Barns, Ardi Mayer and Peter Healy, Cliff Graybrook and David Twohig, Archie Laidlaw and Neville Firkins to reach the final.

Their opponents from Doubleview being Bob Fryer and Brian Hodgson had played a sensational last end to get 5 and defeat Graeme Evans and Colin Fleay by 1 in the semi.

The scene was set and from the beginning with Ray and his orange bowls giving the Safety Bay team a good start, in  a tight contest.

Norm had an adrenalin rush on the 6th end and being 2 or 3 down drove too wide got a deflection thru a pack and with full pace on sat the shot bowl full on , to stop dead.  That’s the game, if you are up you can get lucky.

On the 7th end with 6 inches and 3 down Norm drew a toucher. Doubleview converted, Ray converts back and to the delight of the large Doubleview support group Brian Hodgson trailed for 2.

Aside from an end in between where Safety Bay got 4 the 11th end was as good an exhibition of skills of all players when the jack was trailed 5 times on a ditch to ditch length with ultimately Norm for the second time trailing to the ditch after being 2 down.

Going into the last end Safety Bay were 3 up on the board, drew 3 when with a back bowl Brian put the jack in the ditch.  Ray and Bob then dueled in what ended up as being a tight measure for 3.

Norm took a breath and with his first bowl drew to within 2 inches of the plinth for second shot.  Brian with only the option of an up shot through the pack gave himself a slim chance but was unsuccessful.

It’s been a long time since a Safety Bay Men’s team actually won a State Event and it was gratifying seeing the ocean green, white and grey shirt with the wind surfer thereon so proudly represented.

Congratulations Ray Kennedy and Norm Read for you steely resolve.  Bowls Safety Bay salutes you as worth winners of the high profile event.

FOOTNOTE

The number of players that nominated for this event and other over 60’s state events could be a message to Bowls WA that club representation restrictions and not the composite sides allowed for the open versions would encourage more players to nominate.

PS Thanks to Lance and Pat Gandy for their support when cheering was needed.

The Over 60's Scene - January 11th 2010

The emergence of the Over 60’s Bowling events has presented a wonderful opportunity of we, the retirees, to play in the competitive scene during mid week. It seems that the venues listed in our fixture book may be incorrect as the latest name sheet indicates Melville as the venue for the Drawn Versatility Fours on Monday 22nd March.  This info comes from the man himself, Trevor Barron.  Graham Scott

What About It!!!??? - From THE JURIST - January 2010

A REVISION of Club Championship Rules and Parameters.

TRIPLES is traditionally very poorly supported. Twenty one ends is too many and it takes too long to complete a game. Over 60's State Triples play 14 ends and manage three games in a day, finishing at about 3.00 - 3.30. Our ladies play seventeen ends. I suggest we consider playing three games in a day and reduce the number of ends to 14 or 15. This will still equate to 42 or 45 ends which is the same or little different to 2 X  21 = 42 ends played at present.

PAIRS as per the AER Mixed Pairs Australian Championship and recently held Australian Pairs are played with 3 bowls straight and whilst played in sets we may or may not adopt this characteristic.

SUGGEST these features be appraised by the appropriate people and hopefully our Club games are made more time efficient and are played more in parallel with the modern game.

CONCLUSION.  Not all members wish to be totally devoted to the club and game potentially every weekend and may have grandchildren or other social interests that deter them from entering club events. Let us not be frightened of change and continue to do things the same old way simply because that's the way our forefathers used to do it.

SINGLES.  What about having a CONDITIONS OF PLAY sheet accompanying the nomination sheet and stating that all players are to make themselves available for the whole of the first day to play or mark. Provided that all players were present perhaps it might be considered appropriate to give dispensation at the discretion of the captain of the day.

THIS REVISION could just make room in our programme for a Mixed Two Bowl Singles event scheduled for ONE day.

One Blue North - Saturday 31st October

The Players and partners of One Blue North had a team bonding dinner at the Golden Harvest Chinese Restaurant on Saturday night. It was very well attended, even a player from One Blue South managed to sneak in, and a most enjoyable night was had by all. The team hopes to make these occasions a monthly event.

Pennants - Saturday 31st October

All our pennant teams registered wins on Saturday prompting President Maurice Birtwistle to dig into his cash reserves and buy us all a beer. It's been a rare event in recent years. The women's inaugural Saturday Pennant side also came home with a win so congratulations all round.

State Blind Championships - October 2009

Dave Goddard has again done us proud by winning the State Blind Bowlers Championship. Due credit must also go to his director Frank Keogh. Congratulations to you both on an outstanding achievement.

Bunbury XXXX Gold - Open Men's Fours - 6th & 7th October

Two teams from Safety Bay represented our Club at the above carnival on the 6th & 7th October - John Mulhall, Nobby Clark, Rob Stanley, Lance Gandy and Norm Read, Graham Scott, Neil Smith, Brian Scott (Graham's brother). We both won four games which wasn't enoogh to put us amongst the prize winners. I would recommend this carnival to our players as it's very well run, it's only an hour and a half drive from home and it has they same synthetic greens as ours. Keep it in mind for next year.

Pennant Fixtures for 2009/2010

The fixtures for both men and women are now on the website. On Saturday the men have 1 Blue North, 1 Blue South, 2 Red, 4 Red and 5 Blue. Midweek the men have 1 White, 2 White, 3 White, 3 Blue and 4 Gold. The women now have a Saturday team 1 Jade and on Tuesdays they have Premier, 1 Green North, 1 Green South, 2 White, 3 Green and 3 Blue.

Dalkeith-Nedlands Spring Fours - 12th & 13th September

Deane Payne, Ray Beard, Graham Scott & myself along with Gary Wilkes in a composite team represented Safety Bay - both teams managed to pick up Round prizes which wasn't bad for us seeing as it was the only game we won. Graham Scott & Deane Payne were very succesful in the raffles winning accommodation for two in one and a dinner for two in another rafflle. Sounds very romantic - I'm really worried about that pair!!

Back From Holidays - September 2009

Back on deck again after an enjoyable break from the bowling scene. The Safety Bay Spring Carnival was a huge success, thanks to the tireless efforts of John Biglin, in spite of the freezing windy conditions on the Saturday. Lets hope next year John can organize better weather. The pennant season is fast approaching with the men having a One Blue South & One Blue North team this year. Pennant practice has started already!! The Men's Pennant Draw will be available on the Bowls WA website on the 21st September.

Australian Blind Bowlers National Championship - May 2009

Congratulations to David Goddard who again excelled in this event, held at Victoria Park from the 20th to the 29th May, with a Silver Medal in the Singles, a Bronze Medal in the Men's Pairs and a Gold Medal in the Mixed Pairs for a record fifth time. David was full of praise for his director (helper) Frank Keogh.  David is a credit to our Club.

Women's State Senior Triples - April 2009

Congratulations to Maureen Beard, Jennifer Kite and Maggie Main on winning the  Women's State Senior Triples. The ladies are really putting the Safety Bay Bowling Club on the map.

Men's Saturday Pennants - Saturday 28th March.

Congratulation's must go to our Division 2 Gold team who finished on top of the ladder and have won promotion to Division 1 Blue North. Div 1 Blue South, Div 2 White and Div 5 Gold are all in the play-offs and have a chance for promotion. Div 4 Gold finished sixth and will maintain their position.

Seniors Over 60's Versatility Carnival - Monday 16th February

Graham Scott and myself played in the above Carnival at Warwick Bowling Club. It is played once a month at different venues. The cost is $20.00 per person and you nominate similar to our bankers as a lead, second, third or skipper. Its a popstick draw and you play fours, spit three bowl pairs and fours. All the nominations go back into prizes - it went down to tenth place at Warwick and Graham managed sixth place. It didn't go down far enough for me!! Next month the carnival will be played at Melville and Graham assures me that he will have a nomination form on the board. If anyone wants to know more see Graham or myself.

Lake Grace Classic - 10th & 11th February 2009

Ron Hall took a team, including Norm Read, Russell Heydon and Noel Branley, to Lake Grace to compete in the above event. Although we weren't in the overall winners we won enough games to cover our entry fee. The event was very well run and the prizemoney of $60.00 for a fours win and $40.00 for a pairs win kept all the teams interested until the end. I've often heard Ron complain about skippers sitting on the bench when their team is bowling, but apparently he's had a change of heart, as that's where he spent a great deal of his time with an occasional wave of the arm to indicate what hand we should bowl on.

Men's Saturday Pennants - 31st January 2009

Our three top teams had good wins on Saturday with 1 Blue South still in third position, 2 White also in third spot and 2 Gold haninging on to top spot by 4 point from Warnbro. Both Div 4 Gold and Div 5 Gold went down and are both in 5th position on their respective ladders. The year still looks good with all teams in the running for the play-offs and Div 2 Gold hopefully for promotion.

Australian Indoor Singles - 21st & 22nd January

Six of our women bowlers contested the above event - Margaret Richeardson, Kaye Read and Margaret Nash at Doubleview and Maureen Beard, Lyn Scott and Pat Gandy at Cambridge. Lyn Scott and Margaret Richardson played well and made it through to the second day. The eventual winners were Noelene Abe, Janne Gibson and Therese Hastings who will play against other State finalists at Tweed Heads.

Women's Classic Fours at Dudley Park - 10th & 11th January

Congratulations to Maureen Beard and her team of Sue Petersen, Daphne Stanley and Coralie Shattock on winning the Classic Fours held at Dudley Park on the 10th and 11th January 2009. Well done also to Laurie Kenward and her team of Doris Sharp, Lyn Scott and Maggie Main who came fourth in the same event. The girls are really flying the flag for Safety Bay.

Men's Saturday Pennants - 10th January 2009

The year has started off well for our pennant teams with 1 Blue South recording its first away win over Cockburn and consolidating 3rd spot. The 2 White side had a good win over Sportsmans to move up to third spot and 2 White have retained top spot even though going down against Rockingham. Our 4 Gold had a good win over Claremont and move up to third on the ladder and 5 Gold remain in 6th position with a win over Thornlie.
